A question originated by Scott – what size is a newborn hobbit? Also apply said question to dwarves and centaurs (which I presume are colt-sized, but still.)

Okay, Chris hasn't answered the question yet. So, I'm going to try. The first thing is to know the size of a full grown hobbit. I'm willing to guess that hobbits are more closely based on halflings than hobbits in LotR due to their lifespan. As such they should be 2'8” - 3'4” normally. Now we need to compare the hight to real world humans. In the U.S. The average height of men is 5'9.5” and 5'4” for women, or about 5'6” on average. This means that the average full grown human in the united states is about 1.78 times larger than the average hobbit. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the average human baby is 1.78 times larger than the average hobbit one. Although taller people tend to have smaller babies than shorter, it isn't a perfect ratio. I wasn't able to find any exact statistics on the ratio, but I did find a curve that shows the head size variation over time and a diagram representing head size in comparison with the rest of the body. When fully grown, human heads make up about an 8th of a human's height. According to the official halfling artwork I found, the heads make up about a 7th of the total height. Knowing that a human baby's head is around a quarter of its total height than a hobbit's head would either be one quarter like a human or two sevenths to fit with their respective proportions. Knowing hobbit culture, logic and how creepy baby hobbits would look, I am willing to assume the prior as it would make sense for them to lose less of their childlike traits than to be born less developed. This means that the head to body ratio actually develops at a different rate than humans. If we adjust the upper end of the scale to accommodate for the difference in head to body ratio and move the remainder of the curve to fit with the new model we end up with a difference in the circumference scale between human babies and hobbits. Using the male model, we now have a circumference of 41 cm for new born hobbits and 35 cm for humans. Keep in mind that this is just based on head size comparison. If we consider that humans are around 1.78 times larger than hobbits we can adjust the hobbit circumference we end up with the more accurate measurement of 22.96 cm. Now, knowing that the average human newborn is 20” tall, we can use the head circumference as a ratio to determine the size of a hobbit. 20 inches / 35 cm = 0.57 inches/cm. We can use this ratio to derive that the average hobbit baby is about 13.1 inches long. If we correct this for the number of significant digits at our disposal we learn that newborn hobbits are about 13 inches tall on average. Sources and charts, etc: XXXXXI'll do dwarves and centaurs later.

How much time did you spend on that? 'Cause that was an awesome answer!
