I was looking through the adult league class book and it said that slay rules "if the target takes damage, they die." I feel like you should still take a damage because your avoiding the death part, it's not like a death ray where it outright kills you. While slay is a called skill, it's adding death to the damage, not just killing, so it looks like to you should avoid slay, but not the damage. Just wondering on the ruling for this if there has been one.

That was the original ruling. "You avoid the slay, not the damage." We now run with if you avoid the slay you take nothing. Just because it is simpler. I could be wrong.

There was some point at which it worked one way for adult league but another for junior. Cause in junior it was only the slay being called, whereas adult added a slay to the damage and called both. I don't know whether that's changed at all due to recent rulings though.

I specifically remember Chris saying (for JL) "If you avoid a slay, you avoid the damage as well". I have no clue about adult league.

This is an instance where, according to the standing rulebook, Chris is wrong. Slay only takes effect if damage is dealt. So you would still take the damage but avoid the slay. This is very important in AL and due to issues with consistency betweenlleagues, it has to stick in JL. We will approach Chris and see about how he actually wants it to work, but for the time being, the way the rules are currently written in the rulebook, avoiding slay does not stop you from taking damage.

I understand your reading of the rules and agree that as it is written, avoiding slay only prevents the death- not the damage. Since Aviod is free, this seems fair. However- given that we have shifted to a one it system, taking any damage is effectively slay, which makes avoiding it moot except in Adult league where you might have hits. I would rule that the reading of slay so that "if you deal damage" is a condition of the slay trigger, and should read "If you could have dealt damage to a player in the vitals, they die instead." We should treat it like Hack damage which is damage but is prevented by Avoid. If this is not clear to people, the I will play the rest of the season as Slay also dealing damage for consistency.
