The Harper’s Tune Inn
Six of the Evening
-What follows here is an account of the law enforcement test of Beladynn Thalisse-
Upon dismissal from the Harper’s Tune Inn, we (Roma, a cat and I) sought out a law enforcement official who informed us of the crime we were to solve. Here are the facts:
Five elves were killed; one died permanently and is now a haunt, two forgot the events that led to their death and two remember everything. Three of the elves were attacked in one region, while the other two were attacked in separate regions across the city. All of the bodies were killed in the exact same way: a slay to the upper back, suggesting an elven or human serial killer, due to the similarity and height of the entry wound.
The first victim we spoke to was an elven noblewoman*. She described walking back home in the evening on an near empty street when she heard heavy footsteps and low breathing, suggesting a male killer. She also mentioned that her neighbor came out to help her. Thus, he was the next person we interviewed.
The neighbor was walking back from market when he found the noblewoman dead on the street. He looked around and saw two figures walking away. One was tall and possibly male, walking quickly out of sight and the other, of an unidentifiable race, was moving more calmly in the opposite direction. Either could have been the killer, or neither one.
We continued on to speak with the last victim with some memory of his death. He was a elven freeholder who worked in the market, seemingly unrelated to the noblewoman. He describes walking back from the temple after recently obtaining a blessing from Oromё. Upon later questioning, he revealed that he felt like he was being followed. He turned into a side street and heard a swish behind him. Before he could turn to see a face, he was killed. He too suggested a tall human or elf as the suspect, and he later related that he might have heard footsteps behind him.
On whim, I returned to the noblewoman and asked if she had a special connection with the Valar; perhaps she was a priestess or had a blessing. She replied that she was a priestess of the Valar, further confirming my idea that the killer was after those with a close connection with the Valar, potentially a follower of Morgoth.
Next we spoke with a witness of sorts to one of the victims who forgot how they died. He was a priest of the Valar and he and the victim (also a priest) were walking home after tending to the shrines. The streets were empty and they separated at their normal spot. As he kept walking he heard a scream from his friend. By the time he got there, his friend was lying on the ground, dead, while a tall elven or human man in all black scrambled up the side of the building and escaped.
We went on to visit the haunt of the only permanently dead victim of the attacker. It was escalated to the point of a wraith if looks were any indication. It wore the garb of a paladin of the Valar and it had clawlike hands and reddish glowing eyes. The haunt attacked us and killed the cat-human who came with us. I can’t say I did not warn him that something of sort might happen. However, the haunt seemed to react positively to “Valar” and “justice” in particular and we de-escalated it by explaining that we were here to find justice for it’s death. Unfortunately, I mistakenly mentioned Morgoth in it’s presence and it reacted very violently to it. Whether that has to do with who he was killed by or simply the fact that he was a paladin of the Valar, I am not sure. Just as we were debating leaving, the haunt rushed off. We chased it until it vanished in an empty row of houses.
We stayed there for a beat before continuing on to speak to a town guard, one of the victims who had forgotten how they died. She described being alone at night for a guard shift when she turned onto an empty street. Her memories from there on were gone until she was healed. This time, the killer cut her on the chest before delivering the customary stabbing. The woman herself was not a prominent Valar worshiper, although her brother was a notable priest of the Valar.
Seeing no other lead, we continued along to speak with the man. After some prompting and reassurance, he revealed that he felt as if he was watched by someone. This feeling never occurred in his house and was more prominent in the evening or at night. He also described his neighbor, a young elf, who looked at him like she was afraid, perhaps even afraid for him. We thanked the man and continued on to speak to his neighbor.
After several knocks and a bit of a wait, the elven girl answered the door. We asked her about her neighbor and she invited me inside to speak with her in private. I remained on guard, just in case, but followed her inside. She told me that she had seen someone of the killers description; a tall elf with longer brown hair, following the priest around. She recommended that I visit her friend, a human tenant who worked at a tavern, as he had spoken with the man himself. She advised me to wait, simply because doing so might alert the killer, and I thanked her for her help.
At this point, we sent the cat-human to check up on the priest and make sure he was safe and that the killer was not following him. Being a cat, it would be easier for it to avoid detection. However, the cat saw the killer watching from the street corner it took it upon itself to jump down and attack him. The killer ran, but not before wounding the cat and casting a blessing of Morgoth on it, confirming my suspicions. After telling the cat-human off, we went to the town guard to get the cat identified and to inform them of our progress. They recommended we speak to the girl’s friend and that we keep the cat away from other animals as it might attack and kill them. And so, we continued on to the tavern the girl’s friend worked at.
Initially he was very resistant to the idea of telling us anything, however with a little persuasion and promise of protection, he told us that the killer had approached him and told him that he had work for him. When it was later told to the tenant that this work would be killing people, he backed out. The killer threatened to morganti kill him and his family if he told anyone. He also confirmed what the girl had told us and gave us the location of the killer’s house and his name.
We headed out for the house immediately after stopping at the law enforcement office and asking for protection for the tenant and his family. The killer’s house was at the edge of the city and seemingly quiet. After knocking on the door several time, I went around the side to try and see inside. In that moment, he burst out of the house, attacking Roma, who was stationed in front of the door.
We fought him for a while, and he seemed to be able to use slay, snare and a blessing ray, whether through magic items or class skills, I am not sure. We got him down, but before that, he hit me with his blessing ray. As we stood around looking for some rope of sorts to bind him with, I started to feel weird, like a sort of cold understanding came over me. I fought it as hard as I could and I sacrificed some mana to the Valar to get it off of me, but it only bought me enough time to warn the people with me to stay away. One of them wounded me, which was wise, but only solved the problem temporarily.
From there, I was told that the cat went off to find rope and returned with a law enforcement officer who bound the killer up but left me untied. And in that moment, I woke up again.
This time, the coldness was stronger and more complete and it washed over me. A small part of me fought back, screaming that it was wrong, but for the most part I felt like this was the way it always had been, and I that I had simply never noticed it before. I attacked my party members. I could remember it vividly, though I perhaps it would be better to forget it. The feeling was disturbing, to say the very least, not to mention how easily it seemed to come over me. They eventually dropped me and took me to law enforcement who identified me and confirmed that I wasn’t myself. From there, we turned the serial killer in and he is currently being processed by Councilwoman Nehtar Akaris and the rest of law enforcement.
