Hello, my name is Roc Dar and I am a Cobben researcher specializing in herbalism. Even though I might have some strong opinions about the events I will now narrate, I hope to record them as accurately as possible.
The Voyage: That's right. It took us a year to sail from Sorikonia until we reached the first of what we believe is an outlying island of Urelia. Constantly harassed by WTO ships, we also had zero wind for the entire journey, which greatly slowed down our progress. We believe that all but one of our 8 ships were lost. With rations down to 6 months, the mood was low until, for the first time in a year, we gazed at land. Just as we came into sight of this island, the wind also began to pick up again! Invigorated, we began exploring the island with a vigor.
Parasite Beach: You thought we were pulling into paradise? You were wrong. The island was a strip of land around 12 miles x 4 miles which rose in elevation towards the center and then fell in elevation back to sea level. I will let our map makers share with you a more accurate description. As soon as we landed and began pulling in our dinghies, we noticed beetles, bugs, and worms trying to dig themselves into our flesh. Luckily we dealt with that as quickly as possible, before (I hope) anyone got infected. We noticed that the island was covered in a form of raw wheat, a practical bounty of food if only we could clean up the mess. Running through the blanket of wheat was even more pests: littles snakes, and tons of rats. The rats were the most dangerous concern, because they were huge, aggressive, and infected with who knows what.
Manmade Formations: Proceeding further inland, we came across a small wall made up of volcanic rock that was definitely man-made. We estimated it to be about 200 years old. Near the top of the island was a broken down village with a commanding view of the whole island. There was a huge (100 ft) tall tree, with giant acorns with a walnut-like smell. We believe that the acorns are not poisonous, but further research should be conducted. Next, we decided to enter one of the houses whose foundations we noticed were made out of volcanic rock. Suddenly, a giant tabby cat leaped onto one of our party members and began attacking! Due to the extremely tight space where the "battle" took place, we did more damage to ourselves than we did to the cat, but ultimately we subdued it. We noticed a large pile of half-eaten corpses of rats and the like and decided that the cat could be a useful ally in eliminating the hordes of parasites.
Next Moves: We decided to take plenty of the raw wheat and other grasses, several of the big tree's acorns, chips of the volcanic rock, various dead parasites, and of course the tabby cat back to the ship. There were several other geographical features of the island worth research, including a lake (again, talk to our mapmakers for more). Also, from the top of the island, we could see several other islands further south that would be logical stepping stones towards Urelia proper.
