Hey Mom, Month 1
Day 1 post travels. I’ve arrived in Mandel, it’s something alright. I shouldn’t really be surprised honestly. It’s everything I would expect out of a prison city. The streets are cramped and depressing. Mostly everybody looks down as they walk, afraid of seeing anybody else or gods forbid meet their eyes. The ones who don’t look down as they walk are the guards who are watching their flocks, looking and hoping for someone to fuck up so they can catch them and throw them away for the rest of their lives. Thankfully I can just walk with a hood up and nobody will notice my heritage. Going to go into the city today and look for an inn or something to rest in and hopefully meet others with similar goals. I’ll update after that. Updates: Entered the inn and met an interesting bunch of people. There was a human? It was hard to tell. He had blue leathery skin pretty much everywhere I could see. The other one I met looked like a hobbit with wings. Realizing I’m not gonna be the weirdest one here is pretty refreshing. Was talking with Silvian (The human?) he asked some questions about me and I answered and when I returned with questions for him he dodged each one. Not that surprising though, I bet he gets trashed a lot for how he looks. Creo (The Hobbit) just flew around and said little. He seems to have little intelligence with him. The last person I met was a small pale human. While we were socializing another human came down from the upstairs area of the inn. Avory (as I later learned) is small and pale. She seems mentally broken, it’s sad to see. She is so young, yet clearly shattered inside. Acts much younger than she should, if it’s an act it’s quite convincing. Left the inn with Silvian and took a small walk before returning to a glade I found to sleep.
Day 2 The inn seems to be the only interesting thing in this city. Got harassed by a guard earlier for smiling at him when he looked at me, he assumed I was up to no good and gave me a good scolding for doing nothing. Fucking prick. After that I decided to go back to the inn to see if I could meet more people. Silvian was already there drinking, but there were also three people I had not met yet which was good. I introduced myself to two humans and a hobbit (Sparrow, Karis, and Sena). None of them had anything note worthy about them (at least on the surface), nice to meet some sort of normal people here. They were also much nicer than anybody else I’ve meet in this town. Later I met an elf lady (Anna) who was… odd to say the least. She just kind of just flew around and acted like she was better than everybody else. I think she meant well though. The humans were curious about my hair dodged a few questions regarding it. I don’t really know anybody here well enough to share that yet. Hopefully that changes with time though. After a while a small Elf child entered the inn and seemed lost. Apparently she was not lost and introduced herself to people and already had a room rented her name was Ruylth or something like that. (I’ve only heard it not seen it) Talked for a while longer then wrote a bit then left.
Day 3 People are dumb and filled with bullshit. I got harassed by another guard today. It’s no wonder everybody looks down as they walk. I was in a bad mood as I entered the inn today. I entered the inn to Sparrow holding Creo by his neck and interrogating him. Asking him what he was. Fuck that shit. Who does he think he is? Well that shit did not fly with me and I yelled at the guy for a bit. Sparrow then went to another younger human in the inn and asked the same questions aggressively. As I was yelling at him it turns out that he wasn’t even part of the guards or law enforcement. To think that he can just do that to people here… this place is fucked. He was screaming about demons and how he suspects us. Like? Seriously dude? If there are demons you think that you are the most equipped to deal with that? Fuck off. Anyways I’m ranting a bit. After Sparrow left I got to meet Alexis (the human boy) he seems like a nice kid when he isn’t being berated by xenophobic humans. I wrote for a bit then left again
Day 4 Nothing really interesting happened today. I walked around the city. I missed lots of it though since I was actively avoiding eye contact with any guards. This city feels so small and cramped. I dislike it here. I should try spending more time around the city instead of inside of it. The inn was calm today. It was just Alexis, Rue, and I sitting and talking idly. The child seems to be just a child and nothing more. She was talking about some nightmares she always gets which was odd to hear. They seem to be very dark thoughts coming from someone as young as her. As I was writing today Avory came downstairs and began chatting with me. It makes me sad to see her so clearly shattered inside. I’ll try to be as forgiving and helpful for her as I can be. She was interested in my hair and what I was so I turned myself into a tree for her enjoyment. She wanted to see what it felt like to become a tree so I turned her into one briefly as well. That was all my excitement for my day though.
Day 5 Any information you know about this place that you can pass onto me would be much appreciated. I feel like there is this soul sucking depression when I am in this city. I have not spent as much time in it as recently. I want to go explore the forest to the north of the city. At some point I’ll drag some of the other adventurers with me for that. The inn was quiet so I left quickly after entering
Day 6 Met two new people in the inn. Aria a very shy dwarf and Oroko a well dressed hobbit who seems to be attempting to one up everybody else by how noble and polite she acts. I think that you would hate her. As I was leaving the inn Alexis called me prince I think it was a passive aggressive way of distancing me from the rest of them. I corrected her then left.
Day 7 Nothing of note has happened. Much of the same, exploring the city a bit then getting tired of it then stopping off in the inn before leaving back to the glade I’ve been sleeping in. Dad would like it here. OH! I almost forgot. I’ve been learning code since that might become useful as an adventurer. I’m not that good at it, but I’m getting better as I practice. Well that should wrap up this letter. I’ll update you more as things begin to pick up around here again.
Yours truly, Feydrin

[Private until Feydrin decides otherwise]
Feydrin,
Good to hear from you. It's all same old up here, I'd tell you the news but I don't trust the post. Keep your ears open, you might hear it anyway.
Never been to that city myself but I know some people who have. Prisons are supposed to be a damn sight cleaner than the ones here, and less cozy. A great deal emptier too, I'd venture - not many'd risk a jail cell someplace like that. Prisoners are likely to be more desperate though; at least here people know they'll get out someday, even if half of them'll be back in just as quick. Careful who you trust. Not all guards are good guards, and some'll let power over other people go to their heads - and not all criminals are bad people, either. Either one could have been on the other side of that wall if life had been a little different for everyone. But most criminals who end up someplace like that are going to be the scum of the earth, and most of the guards are there risking their lives despite the soul-crushing work. Be respectful of everyone but don't give up your respect to some dungheap who hasn't earned it.
You keep your head up, you hear me? Guards are the same everywhere, and if they want you in trouble they'll find a reason no matter what you do. Don't give them a reason until it's a damn good one, but in the meantime, don't let them make a mouse out of you either. It's anyone else's street as much as it is theirs. If you can't stand up to a dirty look or two just walking it, what makes you think you'll be able to stand up to them once there's a real problem? You walk same as you would at home, and if someone tries to give you grief you haven't earned, you give them hell for it. Watch the backs of the rest of that crew when shit gets real, and they'll do the same for you.
Can't say I know much else of the place. Suppose it connects up to Darkwir somehow with that nasty little labyrinth, and that makes me none too happy. Darkwir was nothing but trouble while I had to keep an eye on it, and I don't doubt Mandel's been thrown in with the same lot. Watch yourself, and don't get too comfy. Trouble takes many guises, and sometimes it's the chair you're sitting on.
Love, Mom
