The Catastrophe of Frozen Fire.
Before the end of the season, The Vernorod was being overrun by skeletal minions of what seemed to be a sun demon. These minions were digging; looking for what we assumed was a balrog. The mountain began to smoke and ash billowed into the sky. Circling the column of ash were nineteen phoenixes, none smaller than size seven. The volcano erupted, pouring lava down the east and south sides of the mountain. The lava covered all of the Heldehini and much of the Thundering Plains. Out of the volcano flew a size ten, humanoid-like dragon with crimson scales and horns of ebony, wreathed in black flames that ended in an unnatural emerald color. It seemed to cast its gaze towards The Vernerod as spells began bombarding the dragon and the phoenixes. Many of the phoenixes perished, only to rise again. From a small clearing near town flew a man with the head of a hawk that grew in size to match that of the dragon. The twenty or so phoenixes promptly took flight to the south. What was determined to be the Avatar of Horus, began drawing souls from The Vernerod to form chains, binding the dragon in time and space. It sealed the chains with a mystical lock in the shape of an eye. The avatar then turned back towards the town and rushed the gates. It drew a sword of flames and swept it across what seemed to be all of Crestfall. No physical damage was done, but it seems that the soul of anyone who had ever taken a life had been cut thin.
Over the year the mountain sat, still in stasis. The Thundering Plains exist now only in historical texts. All that remains are The Black Glass Flats. The land from the foot of the mountain to the cusp of the marshlands is obsidian and cooled lava. It is now domain to fire elementals, red slimes, fledgling phoenixes, and the occasional flaming rift troll. This place is entered only by the strong of heart or weak of mind. An expedition had set out to discover the fate of the dwarf and kobold cohabitation that has once resided there, only to find a haunted graveyard of ash covered statues depicting the cowering races.
The Island Escapade
On the Island beyond the storm, there are two opposing factions. One calls themselves Hido, after their leader Kana Hido, The First to Rule. They have lived on this small island inside of a hollowed out mountain for nearly 800 years. Kana Hido is a man no older than 50, very stout and broad but has ruled these parts for the full 800 years of them being here. His people call him a god amongst men. They do not believe him to be truly divine but his right to rule must be in their eyes. They craft some fantastic weapons and armor that has over the last year began being shipped to Crestfall due to a young elf’s entrepreneurial spirit. They are of supreme craftsmanship, normally silver, and very easily enchanted. Though much of what they make is Samurai in design many knights and veterans tend to wield them due to the fear it can cast into the opponent. They have a strong feudal system with Kana Hido as Emperor, His sons Kino and Hino Hido as Shoguns, several daimyo including several Crestfall natives, and many samurai under them. Peasants and Surfs are very common and most merchants and artisans are not of any note. They are a sworn enemy of the ones calling themselves The Ten.
The Ten are a group of beings known to us know as Tengu, a humanoid bird with mostly developed hands, talons for feet and full raven or crow head. They say they haven’t always look this way but when they became mortal it was a price they had to pay and would be willing to pay again. Their story goes that they were guardians of the royal line and were so since there was a royal line. In the city of Latetanda long ago there was a princess that was promised to wed a shogun by the name of Lord Dayen. He was a shogun only because of the deeds he had completed and these acts were under investigation. The Ten claim he was an enemy of the family and should not marry the princess. This is where things get complicated, for one of The Ten was in love with the princess but could not act on his feelings because of his honor and position as guardian. She loved him as well and the emperor knew this, so was the claim of Dayen’s “danger” just to keep the princess from marrying him for safety or so that the princess and the Tengu could be together. The Emperor decided it was the later. The Ten must follow the wishes of the Emperor and they did. The wedding day came and the two lovers met in secret. The princess vowed her everlasting love to the Tengu and he in turn did the same. For an immortal that is a strong promise, one that the divines knew was unable to be kept in his current form. A being descended upon the two lovers, a horse with scales covering its body and horns adorning its head. The being asked for him to make a choice to stay the protectors of man, the Emperor, and the royal family or love this one until they both pass on. The Tengu without any pause choose the princess and a strange light shot from the being and the Tungu was transformed into what they are today and were made mortal. This upset Dayen for the princess was not his and sent a group of his Samurai to exterminate the now fragile Tengu. This force was led by a man named Kana Hido. The Tengu couldn’t fight the samurai and his men so they fled with some protection from a few divine beings the Tengus had favor with and the aid of an elven king. They made it to this small island and lived inside a hollowed out mountain. The samurai took chase and followed them across the ocean and battle to extinct them to this day. The Ten are craftsmen and artisans mainly and make beautiful pottery from clay and jewelry from the jade that fills their mountain. The jewelry and things have begun being seen across Crestfall due to the very same young elf that has kept from both sides the secret that he trades with both. The society of The Ten is very similar to that of any in Crestfall, there is a Royal family but they do not lead the land only advise on a council. The council consists of someone from each guild including journeymen and the royals. The Ten live hand in hand with humans and a couple half elves, unlike the purely human Land of Hido. The Ten try to “raid” farms and villages in The Land of Hido, bring messages to families and loved ones, stealing excess food for the villagers, and taking out the occasional samurai. They are mainly assassins and ninja’s but mages are not uncommon.
